Fuquay-Varina History

As the name suggests, Fuquay-Varina has a heritage of two communities brought together by a couple’s romance. The first European to settle in the area in the 1600’s was a Frenchman named William Fuquay who purchased 1,000 acres of land here. His son, Stephen discovered a spring one day while plowing his fields and after using it for drinking water because convinced that it had healing properties. Friends and neighbors were soon caught up in the excitement and the springs developed a reputation. Tourists came to the area and hotels, one of them being the schoolhouse. The first schoolmaster, J.D. Ballentine who was enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War was caught up in the romance that began the unity of the two communities.

Many young women at this time wrote to the troops to promote their morale and Ballentine received letters from a girl who signed her name “Varina”. They later met, fell in love and married after the war. They settled in the town of Sippihaw after the war, and Ballentine acted as the postmaster calling it Varina. A community soon developed around the Varina Mercantile Company, started by the Ballentine Family. The Town of Sippihaw was renamed Fuquay Springs in 1902 and included Varina in its limits in 1909. As the communities began blending together, they eventually joined to create Fuquay-Varina.

Whether it’s the affordable home prices, room to grow a business, friendly community or amenities that draw residents to Fuquay-Varina, it continues to be a place where new and old faces alike want to call home.
